Anime fans will be glad to hear BabelCon has plans to expand their anime track to include several
guests, Cosplay contest, and lots more panel discussions, instead of primarily showing videos.
Plus we're working on a Horror track, an Author's track, and the Scinema Film Festival (various
categories). This will be in addition to the Kids track, Indoor Ren Fair track, Sci-Fi track, Fantasy
track, Science track, Paranormal track, and Games track (video and tabletop) from previous years.

We've added FOUR new pages to the website, as you may have noticed. These describe some of
our new year-round events, such as the Babel Feast, the Babel Krewe in the Spanish Town
Parade, the new Babel Gaming Club, and the Halloween Party.

The new location for BabelCon 2009 is the Cook Hotel and adjoining Lod Alumni Center. This
spacious venue has many advantages over the other locations we've been:
  • First and foremost -- if we are to go by our young, single volunteers -- the new location is
on Sorority Row for the LSU campus, which is right next to the jogging track. I can see their
    point. Moving on...  8-)
  • Second, and more seriously, the "cost:benefit ratio" is much better than we've had at any
other location, including the Holiday Inn Select. This means in 2010 we can put more money
into procuring bigger and better guest stars, increase our efficiency in various executive
areas, and an expanding our advertising.
  • Third, the location is right next to the lake on the LSU campus. Our fellow nerds, geeks,
and dorks will be right at our back door, meaning a built-in attendee population. And don't
worry about parking or traffic flow, as this area of LSU campus is not a closed traffic area -
no passes are required for through traffic. Parking is free, and should be sufficient for our
    projected attendance figures.
  • Fourth, the rules at this location are almost as lax as those we had at the Conference
Center our first and second years. This means we plan on adding a) alcohol after 6pm, b)
snacks near the game room, c) a hospitality suite, among other things.
  • Fifth, this location is more secure that any we've had in the past. Not only does the
merchant room lock tight (with wooden doors and actual walls), but the entire Lod Alumni
Center is locked after con hours. Plus, there are only two entrances to the building, which
means less doors to watch for potential gate crashers. In addition, there is no "through
traffic" of non-attendees, because we're doing a total buyout of the facility.
  • Sixth, most all of the rooms are in one location (the Alumni Center), rather than being
distributed in two, three, or four halls and floors. There are two conference rooms in the
hotel, but we will be using them as auxiliary rooms, not as main panel rooms.
  • Seventh, the location is conducive to room parties, so this year BabelCon will sanction
some room parties. Details on the vetting process will be announced.
  • Notable: Chimes and Walk-Ons restaurants a couple of blocks away, along with other fast-
food places (Canes, Burger King, Jack-in-the-Box, etc).

I want to thank everyone who showed up at the Santastic Christmas Festival! The party started at
2:30 pm, but while we setup the accoutrements, the staff and early guests enjoyed the first two
episodes of The Big Bang Theory. The bit hit of the afternoon was the "Santa Clause Conquers
the Martians", razzed continuously by the MST3K crew.  By the time it was half over, the room was
nearly filled to capacity. Later, Alan took us through the highlights of the Star Wars Christmas
Special -- such as Jefferson Starship singing into light sabers, or Harvey Korman as a 4-armed
alien version of Julia Child.  I think the producers of that show took "too much LDS". After laughing
our way through that, we played the Selfish Santa game.  We had placed the presents under the
traditional BabelCon pink tinsel & pink lighted Christmas tree.  After drawing the Stargate symbols,
we went in order.  The favorite stolen present of the evening was the bobble head Darth Vader.
Other presents included a Hulk transformer, Rubik's cube, Darth Tater, and a set of giant
3-inch-wide D&D dice.  And Santa always wins any duel with Darth Vader by melting his icy heart.

All of us Sci-Fi fans, Gamer geeks, and Science nerds have been invited to the Star One Delta
New Year's Eve party, being held in the Courtyard Marriott at 10307 N. Mall Dr. (off Siegen
Ln), Baton Rouge, LA. This event is open the public, so bring some friends.

Star One Delta provides midnight champagne.
Food is pot luck, and alcohol is BYOB.

Celebration
begins at 8pm, and starting at 9pm there will be a Buzztime home game trivia
competition (prize awarded for highest score of the evening). A special presentation of the
not-yet-broadcast 2008 "
Doctor Who Christmas Special" will occur around 11pm. Free
champagne at midnight!

The party is over when any of the following occur:
1) The pirates are too drunk to walk a straight plank.
2) The 1978 Star Wars Christmas special starts to make sense.
3) Crowds begin chanting, "Toga! Toga! Toga!"
4) More people are in the bathroom than legally allowed in the entire suite.
5) The D&D gamers start rolling furniture instead of dice.
6) The guy in the Darth Maul costume actually mauls someone.
7) Princess "Leia" starts to sound like an amusing double entendre.
8) Dark side of the force discovered someplace other than restroom.
9) Trekkies decide to beam themselves up, using the microwave.
10) Sydney kicks everyone out!
